Radio symposium LaPublika / Afternoon

A day-long international symposium and radio event held by Conssoni in Tabakalera, Donostia. The context and broadcast platform provided by LaPublika consisted of a fifteen-hour public symposium, and continuous live web and international radio broadcast, exploring ‘the capacity of art to contribute to creating the public sphere […] by considering artistic projects as an example of the different possibilities in which art can be formalised to develop a critical gaze on reality’ (Consonni, 2016). LaPublika was a two year artistic research project directed and coordinated by Consonni. It was produced by Donostia / San Sebastián European Capital of Culture 2016, and Tabakalera International Center for Contemporary Culture; with the collaboration of the Faculty of Fine Arts (UPV/EHU), Azkuna Zentroa and Dabadaba.

During the afternoon and evening of the symposium, for our performance of Grey line [Twilight], Mike and I called to Fatima Shamoon, Fawaz, Ida Spagadorou, Olaia Miranda and Ana de Lara to listen through their phones to the sunsets of Kuwait City (Kuwait), Hebron (Palestine), Athens (Greece), Playa de la Zurriola in Donostia and Bamako (Mali).

Fawaz talked to us from the streets of Tel Rumeida, a Palestinian neighbourhood in Hebron where Israelis live in illegal settlements, and the Israeli military has full control. Before listening to the sunset in Tel Rumeida, Fawaz told us that of the 500 Palestinian families that used to live there, only 50 remained.
